Fuel is any material that can be used to generate energy to produce mechanical work in a controlled manner. The processes used to convert fuel into energy include chemical reactions, such as combustion, and nuclear reactions, such as nuclear fission or nuclear fusion. Fuels are also used in the cells of organisms in a process known as metabolism. Hydrocarbons are by far the most common source of fuel in current use, but many other substances can be used as well. ChemicalChemical fuels are substances that generate energy by reacting with substances around them, most notably by the process of oxidation. From Wikipedia under the

I have to do a presentation in one of my classes that persuades against alternative fuels and their use. I've found some info on ethanol and its negative effects but I need 3 examples of fuels to present. Does anyone have any ideas? Asked by Kat - Sat Apr 12 17:28:38 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. The main criticism for many "alternative fuels" is that the process to create/access/process them requires a significant portion of the energy (and sometimes perhaps more energy) than is ultimately available when they are "burned" For example I have heard hydrogen identified not as a fuel, but as an energy transport system. This is because there is no place on the planet that you can drill for, mine, or harvest hydrogen. The hydrogen has to be created through a process that involves the use of other raw materials, and energy. Since no chemical or mechanical process is 100% efficient, there is always some energy lost along the way in whatever process is being used. This means that its takes more energy to create the hydrogen than you… [cont.] Answered by Andrew C - Sat Apr 12 18:23:39 2008 What are the benefits of burning fossil fuels? Q. Q. I need to plan an experiment, that will test how much energy is in different fuels. It must be a fair test. Will be greatful for any ideas! Asked by Effy - Thu Feb 25 17:01:31 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The device they use for this in a laboratory is called a bomb calorimeter. The basic method is to burn a certain measured amount of fuel in the presence of pure oxygen and to measure the temperature rise of the container and everything in it. There are other ways that involve water. Just google bomb calorimetry. That should set you on the right track. Answered by Joe - Sat Feb 27 04:47:48 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Fuels" See also:
