Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly sulphur, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Coal begins as layers of plant matter accumulate at the bottom of a body of water. For the process to continue the plant matter must be protected from biodegradation and oxidization, usually by mud or acidic water. The wide shallow seas of the Carboniferous period provided such conditions. This trapped atmospheric carbon in the ground in immense peat bogs that eventually were covered over and deeply buried by sediments under which they metamorphosed into coal. Over time, the chemical and physical properties of the plant remains (believed to mainly have been fern-like species antedating more modern plant and tree species) were changed by geological action to create a solid material. Coal, a fossil fuel, is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Gross carbon dioxide emissions from coal usage are slightly more than those from petroleum and about double the amount from natural gas. Coal is extracted from the ground by mining, either underground or in open pits. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is the difference between oil and coal? Q. They are both hydrocarbons correct? So is oil the liquid version of coal? If so, how does it stay liquid compared to the rock shape of coal? Asked by Heather H - Wed May 12 00:05:39 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Coal is a solid fossil fuel created by the decomposition of enormous amounts of plant material that were subjected to the correct mechanisms of burial, compaction, heat, and pressure that ended with coal. Oil, on the other hand was created as millions and millions of tiny oceanic microorganisms collected in massive piles. Like coal, they were buried over, compacted, heated, and pressed, but this time into viscous liquid petroleum (and natural gas where appropriate). They are both hydrocarbon compounds, but their chemistries are quite different. They are not the solid and liquid phase of the same thing. I don't need the answer necessarily but website links would be so helpful Asked by Random McGinger - Sun Apr 27 03:58:52 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Coal is a hydrocarbon which contains potential energy in the form of chemical energy. As it burns the energy in the heat will heat up water. Molecules in the water begin moving faster as they heat until the water reaches 100* Celsius (centigrade)/ 212* Fahrenheit. At this point steam is created as water of liquid form changes to a vapor. The expanding vapor will drive turbines, which in turn drive a generator which produces the electric current. Electricity travels through cables till it arrives at your house, to power the radio. At each step the original energy the coal is lost through friction, heat loss, mechanical losses, and electrical losses though miles of cable. The original energy in the coal could be reduced by 75% or so before… [cont.] Answered by Huh? - Sun Apr 27 04:33:17 2008 How much did coal miner make in the 1930s?
