Biofuels are a wide range of fuels which are in some way derived from biomass. The term covers solid biomass, liquid fuels and various biogases. Biofuels are gaining increased public and scientific attention, driven by factors such as oil price spikes, the need for increased energy security, and concern over greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.

Bioethanol is an alcohol made by fermenting the sugar components of plant materials and it is made mostly from sugar and starch crops. With advanced technology being developed, cellulosic biomass, such as trees and grasses, are also used as feedstocks for ethanol production. Ethanol can be used as a fuel for vehicles in its pure form, but it is usually used as a gasoline additive to increase octane and improve vehicle emissions. Bioethanol is widely used in the USA and in Brazil.

Biodiesel is made from vegetable oils, animal fats or recycled greases. Biodiesel can be used as a fuel for vehicles in its pure form, but it is usually used as a diesel additive to reduce levels of particulates, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons from diesel-powered vehicles. Biodiesel is produced from oils or fats using transesterification and is the most common biofuel in Europe.

Biofuels provided 1.8% of the world's transport fuel in 2008. Investment into biofuels production capacity exceeded $4 billion worldwide in 2007 and is growing.

How do I invest in Algae Biofuel? Is it in stocks or commodity?
Q. I want to invest in Algae Biofuel but I don't know how I can do so. Many of the companies are private companies that don't have stock symbols. Do I just invest in big companies that invest in Algae like Chevron or Exxon? Or is a commodity I can buy?

A. You could go to navigate to the Edgar search, do a word search for the term "Algae Biofuel" to find public filings where that term is used and narrow your search from there. I am not aware of an Alage Biofuel commodities contract.

How long will it take for the US to ramp up production of biofuel to the point where it will really matter?
Q. i need to know over the next hour, the answer to this question... How long will it take for the US to ramp up production of biofuel to the point where it will really make a difference? how many years will it take to produce enough biofuel to the point where it will make a difference? i kinda need an exact amount of time...if ya can!?

A. There are a lot of variables, so it's very hard to predict. We first need high-yielding dedicated energy crops to use instead of corn. These could produce much more fuel per acre, and should be suitable to grow on marginal land so that biofuels would not compete with food production. Secondly, we need better microorganisms or enzymes for breaking down the plant material into sugars and converting the sugars to fuel. Ideally this would be a fuel other than ethanol (such as butanol) with better fuel properties and which is easier to transport. Once these technical problems are solved, we also need time to ramp up production, including production and distributing seed, and building factories to convert the material to fuel. Not to mention… [cont.]

What are the chemicals and equipment need to make a home made biofuel from cooking oil ?
Q. I have a old ford pick up and the price of crude oil is outrageous and I want to divert my source of fuel like the bio diesel but I don't know where to start converting cooking oil into biodiesel. Can anyone help me. I will trully appiciate it

A. A link to the "foolproof" biodiesel recipe is below. According to an article I caught the other day, "yellow grease" is now going for about 33 /lb, or around $2.50/gallon. But with diesel fuel around $4.70/gallon around here, biodiesel still looks like a good deal even if you have to buy your grease.
