In particle physics, antimatter is the extension of the concept of the antiparticle to matter, where antimatter is composed of antiparticles in the same way that normal matter is composed of particles. For example, an antielectron (also called "positron") and an antiproton can form an antihydrogen atom in the same way that an electron and a proton form a normal matter hydrogen atom. Furthermore, mixing matter and antimatter can lead to the annihilation of both in the same way that mixing antiparticles and particles does, thus giving rise to high-energy photons (gamma rays) or other particle–antiparticle pairs.

There is considerable speculation as to why the observable universe is apparently almost entirely matter, whether there exist other places that are almost entirely antimatter instead, and what might be possible if antimatter could be harnessed, but at this time the apparent asymmetry of matter and antimatter in the visible universe is one of the greatest unsolved problems in physics. The process by which this asymmetry between particles and antiparticles developed is called baryogenesis.

Could antimatter be the only possible and the most efficient fuel source to get to the nearest star?
Q. Could antimatter be the only possible and the most efficient fuel source to get to the nearest star under the human life span, considering that it would take 40 years to get to Alpha Centauri and that it would only take about four grams of the antimatter? And the fuel source would be as the result of colliding antimatter and matter, thus resulting in the creating of an enormous amount of energy. Don't forget that that antimatter engine could bring the spaceship you're in up to 10% the speed of light.

A. Actually, yes. But you are not the only person to think of this. There are many teams of scientists working on methods to make and store various kinds of antimatter. Others are working on ways to use fusion of normal matter. these two efforts will produce the energy related processes that will be used in the future for common energy needs. The future will run on sunlight. Sunlight=>electricity=>H2 +O2=>hydrogen power=>fusion generation=>antimatter creation and containment/storage=>anti matter power sources for space travel and other uses. Right now, antimatter is created every day for many purposes. It is expensive. Not until there is an unlimited energy supply (the Sun) giving us enough power to make a useful amount of antimatter will… [cont.]

What is it like when antimatter annihilates?
Q. When antimatter and matter collide, do the have a violent, considerably measurable outcome or an outcome where it's unnoticeable to the naked eye? If it is violent, what is it like?

A. When a particle of matter annihilates with its antiparticle, it produces two high energy photons, which carry off the energy. Those photons can interact with surrounding matter, eventually resulting in thermalization, aka heat.

I am doing a science fair project about matter and antimatter.?
Q. Does anyone know a good and easy experiment that I can do to show that matter and antimatter exists. Thanks.

A. :) good news. i can't help you get anti-matter, but i can give you an idea of what to do instead. bring a box of sand or dirt. take a scoop and dig out a good heap and place it next to the hole. explain that the hole represents anti-matter and that the dirt represents matter. when you replace the dirt into the hole, they both cease to exist. no more hole. no more heap of dirt. apply this concept to anti-matter and matter.
