Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. It is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent odour. Ammonia contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to food and fertilizers. Ammonia, either directly or indirectly, is also a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals. Although in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous. In 2006, worldwide production was estimated at 146.5 million tonnes. It is used in commercial cleaning products. Ammonia, as used commercially, is often called anhydrous ammonia. This term emphasizes the absence of water in the material. Because NH3 boils at −33.34 °C, the liquid must be stored under high pressure or at low temperature. Its heat of vapourization is, however, sufficiently high so that NH3 can be readily handled in ordinary beakers, in a fume hood (i.e., if it is already a liquid it will not boil readily). "Household ammonia" or "ammonium hydroxide" is a solution of NH3 in water. The strength of such solutions is measured in units of baume (density), with 26 degrees baume (about 30 weight percent ammonia at 15.5 °C) being the typical high concentration commercial product. Household ammonia ranges in concentration from 5 to 10 weight percent ammonia. From Wikipedia under the

Q. i'm out of ammonia, so can i use venigar instead to mop the floor? any suggestions are appreciated Asked by gafreak93 - Mon Dec 31 14:53:00 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Vinegar is a good floor cleaner. If you have small children or pets, I would recommend it more than chemicals. Often, pets will track traces of dried chemicals on their paws and lick it off. Vinegar is non-toxic, cleans floors, and leaves the place smelling clean. Answered by thezaylady - Mon Dec 31 15:06:31 2007 How concentrated does ammonia have to be to effectively neutralize corrosive primers? Q. I own a Mosin Nagant and I will be shooting corrosive ammo and I read that ammonia in Windex will neutralize the corrosive salts in the old primers. Will a couple of sprays of Windex or a store brand similar that contains ammonia be enough or do I really need to use excessive amounts? Thanks. Asked by Pilot - Fri May 15 00:37:26 2009 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments A. My friend Fatefinger usually knows what he's talking about with regard to hunting and guns but he and I disagree on ammonia and corrosive ammo. Maybe if he brushed up on actual chemistry and ammonia's hydrous characteristics with regard to the salts left by mercury primer ignition, he'd understand that a mild ammonia solution was not corrosive to steel at all, not only neutralized the damaging salts but acted as a buffer to the acids the dissolved salts typically exhibit once dissolved by water alone. Only very high ammonia solutions are corrosive to steel, lower concentrations act completely different. I use water and household ammonia, non-sudsing, about 1:1. Prepared glass cleaners like Windex don't contain Ammonia at all, but the… [cont.] Answered by DJ - Fri May 15 03:43:31 2009 What would be the purpose of microwaving ammonia and pink lemonade?
Q. My brother has been up to something. I came home the other day and saw him putting some things into jars. Then he was heating up ammonia and pink lemonade in the microwave (the whole house smelled like permanent markers). He said something about growing spores. I also saw turpentine oil, vinegar, fish tank hoses, coolers and light bulbs. Does anyone have any sort of explanation for this and if this is dangerous to do in your house? Asked by Nurse Kimmy - Thu Dec 25 15:47:17 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you read the book Frankenstein, this is exactly what the doctor did before he created the monster. Ammonia and pink lemonade. But he did not have a microwave. Your brother is a genius and i bet he becomes famous..
