Alternative fuels, also known as non-conventional or advanced fuels, are any materials or substances that can be used as fuels, other than conventional fuels. Conventional fuels include: fossil fuels (petroleum (oil), coal, propane, and natural gas), and nuclear materials such as uranium.

Some well known alternative fuels include biodiesel, bioalcohol (methanol, ethanol, butanol), chemically stored electricity (batteries and fuel cells), hydrogen, non-fossil methane, non-fossil natural gas, vegetable oil and other biomass sources.

How do you FORCE the world to switch to alternative fuels?
Q. Imagine you are OPEC, you are smart enough to create the largest monopoly in the history of the world, and therefore you quickly realize that climate change is a serious issue and even though you have infinitely deep pockets, you realize that this will be an issue for you too. So how do you, in one simple action, get the ENTIRE world to switch from fossil fuels to alternative sources for their energy needs? You increase the price of fossil fuels, or rather increase the price of your product. You do so incrementally and slowly to avoid a potential economic DISASTER, which could cripple the world entirely. Paying close attention to the global economic situation and adjusting the prices weekly as needed to maintain an acceptable level of...… [cont.]

A. Sorry it's not a conspiracy nor does OPEC have a monopoly. and oil is running out. If your referring to oil shale and tar sands do a search on what it takes to get the kerogen out and what it costs both financially and environmentally. All the easy to get at oil is gone whats left is in 8000 feet of water and another 3 miles below that all having to be done with ROV's since its well below maned subs limits. as well as switching now instead of 15 years from now will cost OPEC trillions. coal to oil is a disaster as well. a good alternative that's happening now bio diesel from algae. Petrosuns Texas algae farm just went on line a month ago it can produce 1000 gallons per acre per year or all of our energy needs on the equivalent of 0.1% of… [cont.]

Does anyone know if there is research being done on Alternative Jet Fuels?
Q. Jet fuel, Kerosene is a fossil fuel and more is consumed in a day from the Commercial Airline Industry than almost anything else. Does anyone know if there is research being done on alternative fuels that can replace Jet Fuel?
Asked by greatlakesmedved - Sun Aug 12 12:36:09 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, but widespread use is decades away. Government and corporate researchers are looking into ways to power commercial jet engines with alternative fuels, although many caution that widespread use could be years or even decades away. Scientists face myriad obstacles, including the difficulty of producing, transporting and using massive amounts of these fuels under harsh conditions such as extreme cold. And for now at least, experts say many alternative jet fuels are more expensive than traditional ones. A big problem, though, is that biodiesel freezes at a much higher temperature than traditional fuel, which could spell trouble in the frigid air at 35,000 feet. Scientists are working on ways to keep the fuel from freezing so readily.… [cont.]
