A. two types? there are many more types than that presently in use.. e.g... van de graafs cyclotrons linacs synchotrons etc. and it's not the structure of atoms that we are learning about these days. it's the structure and physics of *nuclei* and *nucleons*. or commonly in the case of cyclotrons, the machine is being used as a tool - e.g. in medicine to do tomography (view internal structure) or to kill cancerous cells via direct radiation. but in accelerator physics, basically we are learning about the structure and interactions of these things by colliding them and seeing how they proceed from the initial state through a hot excited intermediate state to the final state, the particles from which stream out to our detectors, allowing us… [cont.]
